So, what exactly is Aging in Place Design?
In the simplest terms, Aging in Place Design is "retirement planning" for your home!
This means planning ahead and making adaptations to your home, or even building a new one, with an eye on the future. Aging in Place planning ensures that as physical capacity diminishes naturally over time, your home will continue to accommodate you comfortably and safely.
Aging in Place incorporates the concept of Universal Design which offers design solutions that work for nearly everyone, of all sizes, shapes, ages and abilities. Universal Design is becoming increasingly popular because we now realize the need for homes that will grow old with us. People are living longer and more of us are living with some type of disability.
In the past, home modifications and technology items
designed for seniors had an industrial or institutional
appearance. Not any more...M2 Interiors & Design
offers comfortable, beautiful and individual decorating
and design techniques to let your home continue to
work for you.
Several reasons are cited for this strong Aging in Place preference:
- Comfortable and Familiar Environments
- Familiarity, Safety and Security
Aging in Place Design is Not Just for Seniors...
The Aging in Place concept is great for older adults but it is also beneficial for all populations. For example, wider doorways are beneficial for people using wheelchairs, scooters and walkers but also for someone trying to maneuver a baby stroller in the house. Lower light switches make turning on a light easier to someone in a wheelchair and to a child.
Many of us will experience at least a temporary disability sometime in
our life. Accidents will happen and you could find yourself using a wheelchair,
crutches, cane or walker. The traditional home that serves you well when you
are healthy won't always take care of you when you break a leg or hurt your
back. Everyone wants a home that will take care of them when they are sick
or injured.
We understand these difficulties, and we want to help you make your life a little easier and more productive.
It is not too soon to start thinking about Universal Design or Aging in Place.
